Macleod’s TABLES

With the Cuillin Ridge clagged in and between increasingly heavy downpours, the traverse of Macleod’s Tables proved a fitting alternative, despite a false start or three. (Note: access is best via the the track leading to Loch Bharcasaig, on which, immediately after a cattle grid, a small sign marks the start of a vague path which joins the broad moorland ridge above.)

Once a little height has been gained, the going improves underfoot, culminating in a stiff climb to the summit of Healabhal Beag, the southern and strangely, despite the name, higher of the two tops at 489m.

A good descent, another minor top and a little tussock bashing leads soon enough to Healabhal Mhòr, after which we took a long and good descent on vague trods to Osdale before cutting back towards Orbost. A more direct descent is possible if a shorter day is desired, but at roughly nine miles and 2.5kft, the ‘round’ described will suit many.
